Second Saturday Night Hunt

14 July 2001

T2 was located in Fontana and was not intended to be heard at the start point. T1 was located at Cajalco/215 freeway with a view of the entire San Gabriel Mountain range. Running 25w to an eleven element beam pointed at the mountains there should have been plenty of signal at the start point but apparently the signal was not heard. Attempts to contact the hunters at the start began at 18:45 but no feedback was received about the lack signal until 19:10. The hunters were advised to drive over Grand where both Ts could be heard. Ultimately no official hunters found either transmitter but two unofficial teams, N6MJN/N6XFC and N6ZHZ/KD6CYG bound both Ts. N6MJN/N6XFC finished first and are declared the winners.

My SWR bridge indicated 25w forward power and not much reflected so it is a mystery where the signal went, N6MJN commented that he could tell we were running power by the amount of attenuation he had to use when closing in. The same transmitter and antenna were used several years ago to hide a couple of miles further south and the signal was easily heard at the start.

I offer my apologies to the hunters for my failure to reach the start point.
