Transmitter Hunt

Hider: Scot KA6UDZ

The T went on the air running 1 Watt into a 5-Element Yagi at 20:00. The signal consisted of an unmodulated carrier punctuated by an I.D. of "DE KA6UDZ T6" in modulated CW (MCW) roughly once a minute.

The antenna was aimed at Mt San Antonio A.K.A. Mount Baldy. The hope was that hunters would be led out of bounds. Indeed, two teams did stray or of bounds to the Northeast.

The T was located on the East side of Aviano Lane, South of Woodview Road in the City of Chino Hills. This was near the entrance of Vellano Park. The Lat/Lon are: 33°57'24.3"N, 117°44'10.08"W.

The first hunter in was Ron, WA6CYY. The others followed in time:

Results:

Team Time Mileage
WA6CYY 20:55 22.5
N6AIN/WA6PYE 21:18 31.2
KN6AXN (12/22) 24:10 66.3
Ron, WA6CYY, is declared the winner since he had the fewest elapsed miles. This was likely in part made possible by not straying out of bounds. Around 22:00, a gentleman walking his dog told me I could get a better signal if I moved to the North some distance. When I explained that I was, in fact transmitting, not receiving, I learned that he was KK6CRP. He said he had long wanted to T-Hunt. I passed along the URL's for this site as well as homingin.com.

One final note:

My original plan was to hide the T a quarter-mile South-Southwest (SSW) of last night's T location. That was a hidden T location for a 1st Saturday hunt on April 4, 1992. The hider for that hunt was Jensen WB6ZFU, now an SK. Unfortunately,  that location is now private ranch land. At the time,  it was the road to an Aerojet munitions plant. Maybe this was fortunate after all as my research shows that the old Aerojet factory has been the source of much controversy in the intervening years. Unexploded ordnance and depleted uranium (DU) plus soil contaminated with DU and perchlorate have been removed since 1999. So maybe last night's location was best.

KA6UDZ.
