Transmiter Hunt

Hiders: Joe K0OV and April WA6OPS
Hiding Place:

Except for April, all of my other usual helpers had other things to do Saturday night, so the two of us were on our own. We found a nice spot overlooking the 60 freeway, just west of the 71 freeway junction, set everything up, then discovered the transmitter was not putting out any power, according to the wattmeter. Fortunately, we had a backup transmitter that did move the wattmeter needle.

The half-watt rig was along Scenic Ridge Drive in Chino Hills, but the beam was about a hundred feet down the hill, pointed into the new Wal-Mart across the freeway in Phillips Ranch, and beyond to Mt. Baldy. At least one team drove right by the transmitter but didn't stop because the signal wasn't strong enough there. They then spent some time with the others who were sniffing in the Wal-Mart parking lot. We also heard stories of trips out Carbon Canyon Road or out the 91 freeway to the 71.

Mike appeared to be the clear winner, even though he went all the way up to Temple on the 57 freeway before backtracking. Then I got e-mail on Sunday morning from KF6GQ saying that he should have written down 22.8 miles instead of 28.2 on the sign-in sheet. (Doesn't the Statute of Limitations expire at midnight, Don? This isn't West Palm Beach County y'know.) Back to the calculator. But even with substantial differences in Crenshaw Factors, Mike still won by the equivalent of 0.3 miles.

Welcome to two teams from CBARC club, hunting with their beams and Ramsey Dopplers
