Meathead Hunt

It was a usual May Gray day when I arose at 5:30 AM. I was off and hunting at 6 AM but let me digress to Friday evening..

I couldn’t hear anything when Doug announced that the transmitters were on the air. I wondered where I was going to go
on this “Start Anywhere” hunt. Deryl soon said he could hear two transmitters one very loud at his location and the
bearing was due north. I plotted due north from his house and the bearing went right over Grass Mountain. HO!, no had
hidden there for around 10  years so that must be it.  I programmed  my new GPS to get me to the vicinity by the quickest route.
I said take the 15 north to 138 west to Elizabeth Lake Road and dirt from there.  I didn’t like that idea so much as I
would have no hope of verifying Deryl’s bearing since I would be on the other side of the mountains. But, then again,
I didn’t relish driving  thru LA either…I waited for some other information to help me decide. Wayne came on with his
usual help from Chile and I still didn’t know just what to do

I had been sick for a couple weeks with some kind of kidney infection and was still not 100% but I was going to hunt.
I had the A/C in the 4 Runner pumped up and it was running fairly good. It wasn’t that hot, but I need to shut the
windows when running off pavement as the dust can really fill up the 4Runner. With the windows shut it would be hot.

Back to Saturday morning. I decided to go with the GPS and took off for Palmdale by the back way. I first heard a
transmitter just as I rounded the corner on 138 in Pinon Pines. This is good. At least I hear something and don’t
have to verify Deryl’s bearings. I drove to Grass Mountain directly by the GPS as that is where T2 and T1 were. I
went on to find Talking T and T9 near by and went into Elizabeth Lake looking for gas. Found some at a reasonable
price at Papa’s store and went off to find T5. This only left T10. I had heard T10 several times but the bearings
didn’t cross anywhere. As it was only noon I went back to Papa’s and had a sandwich and a bag of chips.. I decided
to go back to Grass Mountain and get better bearings on T10. On the way back up the hill I got a great bearing on
T10 that went across  Lake Hughes and this sort of agreed with the bearings I had near T5 and I asked the GPS to
route me over to the other side of Elizabeth Lake Road and it did. I shouldn’t have asked it . For some reason it
was adverse to having me manke a U-turn and going back to Elizabeth Lake and up the other side but routed me on 10
miles of dirt and up the other side. I found T10 around 3PM. I went home, had dinner with Marlene at our favorite
restaurant at 5PM.

Total mileage  232, max speed 83, moving average 35, overall average 21, stopped 4:27, Moving time 6:40 Total time
11.08

A good hunt but I was pooped when I got home and slept for three hours.  Then went to bed.
