Jippy's
Story

I woke up tired. Rushed to the 4Runner and loaded in the water bottles. Wiped the windows with the wipers and took off for Kings for a cup of coffee. 90 minutes later with a cup, met VCR and crew at Kings and bent some nice pancakes. I had forgotten my cameras, my cell phone and the price of gas.

To the top of Palos Verde (1050 ft, the highest elevation found all day) where Tony's screaming sniffer was the hit of the crowd and Don's automatic attenuator was admired by Tony. The signal was heard, weak and out in the ocean, but heard. Bearings were exchanged and lied about and I took off for east San Diego. Down PV drive to make sure the transmitter wasn't hiding in a bush near the starting point. I got on the 405 southbound. At the Sana no-fry viewpoint got the same bearing to east San Diego and rushed to the rest stop for a pit stop.

Met some lost hunters there. Went on down to Del Mar where the original bearing crossed the shoreline back into California and there was the Transmitter. No parking and a really great hiding place right across the street in an abandoned train station with a very secretive driveway and 8 ft fences, but where they there?..;.no way. Planted in the parking lot of a motel right on the beach. Ray also had a transmitter on in his Discovery three cars from Deryl's but he had no sign-in sheet.

On to the next transmitter which was at black mountain. I drove over to it, but couldn't find a way to the transmitter that seemed to be coming from the top of the hill went around the north side looking for a way in. Nothing. Drove in to Ranch Bernardo and got some food and gas and then went around the south side of the mountain and drove up every road including the one two transmitters were on and kept on going. Not a good day. Finally zeroed in on the transmitter heard from Del Mar and was the first to find it. While I was coming down from the 1000 ft straight up climb to the transmitter, I met other hunters and then even more showed up and soon it was a festival. On my way out, I found the third transmitter on the side of the road up to the parking place for the other one and about 3000 ft away.

All transmitters were on or very near paved roads, no dirt roads were involved, much less any 4WD roads. I have seen harder Fullerton Hunts..Boring.. Bob, WB6JPI
