Deryl's Story

My bearing at the start was 65°. Went out 91 to Green River. Jippy showed up and we both decided it was coming from Big Bear. Went up 330 to 18 and around the north side of the Lake.
Met Bob again at the sight over looking The desert. It was coming from out there.

After Bob went down Hwy 18 I followed and stopped several times taking bearings along the way.
I finally went south and east on 247 till I got to Bessemer Mine Rd. There was a good bearing up it so up I went and on and on, and every time the signal got strong I would crest a ridge and drop down it would go away. I wasn't sure it the road, such as it was, would go all the way through to 40 but I kept going.

There was a Microwave site ahead but the signal wasn't strong enough for it to be there. There is another microwave site on the other side of 40. Maybe it is there. But when I crested the hills and can see the 40 off in the distance and the microwave site, it was obvious, by the signal strength, that it wasn't there either.  Must be on the other side near the 15.

What to do, go on the dirt roads that might not go through or go west to Newberry Springs and up to the 15. not wanting to chance a dead end dirt road I went west to Newberry  Springs.

Going east on the 15 and the signal was right in front and getting stronger. But every time I crest a hill and go down it goes away.

On and on I go and it's already after 5:00 PM and dark. I was well past where I would have crossed the bearing from Bessmer mine road and it was still east. Must have been a bounce.

By the time I reached  Zzyzx Rd I have had it. The signal is still in front and not as strong as it was at Big Bear. Damn, must be in Nevada. I turned around and headed for home. Would have liked to have found one T.

On the way back Dave N6MJN, calls and I give him all my excuses and why I am heading home. I comment that I can still hear the Ts and they are in front again. Must be coming off Baldy area. Dave hangs up and "OH NO" the T I am hearing is T6 and it just went to my right at Hodge Rd. Next off ramp is 4 mile ahead. I turn around and go back.

After about 30 minutes of bouncing around on dirt roads and NO roads at all, running over endangered turtles and bushes,  I found T6 in a bush north of the freeway about 1/4 mile. At least I found 1 T.
