Meathead Transmitter hunt

Hider: Don KF6GQ, Steve KD6LAJ, John W6BCE

In this hide I wanted to include John W6BCE, who was with us on the hunt for Deryl last April.
John deferred to us, the location and theme of the hunt.

Well as usual, we didn't want the hunt to be too far away and keeping with the MEATHEAD theme, we decided to place the T's up at the Crystal Lake area of Angeles National Forest. Now we all know that the T's are never up hwy 39! they are always on route 2! I went up to check area on Monday and located a couple of possible spots to hide one of the T's. Now I wasn't able to get a hold of Steve Friday night (in fact as I write this report, I still haven't heard from Steve!) So I wasn't able to confirm with him as to where he was planing to place his T (T2). I was going to go and place my main transmitter on Friday afternoon, with a timer to go on at 10 am Saturday, but then I realized that my timer wasn't a 24 hour timer but only 12 hr., so I had to plan on going up Saturday morning with John W6BCE. Picked up John at 7:30 and drove up to Crystal Lake, and placed the transmitter (T9) with plenty of time to go down and set #2 transmitter T7. Set timer for 10 am. And went to cafe at Crystal Lake for breakfast, and started down hill about 9:30. Almost all the way to East Fork turn off, 10:00 o'clock rolls around with no signal from T9! So back up to T9 to find the problem with the T. found that as I closed the ammo can, I dislodged the +12 Volt from the battery terminal. It is now 10:37 and I hear N6AIN crying that he can't hear any T's and N6MI* telling me T9 is too strong *(this memory might be from a pass hide I did).  Back down mountain to hide one more T because I know KD6LAJ only hid one T and I told Deryl to put in the upcoming info pack, that there would be three T's maybe five, so I got to get a second one out soon! When we got to thee location I wanted to hide, the road was closed and so was Glendora Mt. Road. One more T to hide and no place to go! Well we couldn't drive all the way back to 39, because by now hunters would be coming up from below, so we found a turnoff along side East Fork rd. put a ELK two meter beam and pointed it towards Hwy 39. We babysat there for about and hour and it was getting hot, and KA6UDZ drives up. So we chatted with Scot for 10 20 minutes, Then we left to have lunch.
  It seems that KD6LAJ's T was not found and three teams found T7 (East Fork T). Only N6MI / AF6O team foung T9. It's too bad because it was on a nice hiking trail about a hundred and fifty yards from parking lot, with nice big trees and views of valley. When Deryl quit before finding T9, he told me where he had gotten to, when he became sick from the altitude, and decided to quit. I elected to give him a ½ find (with the Board's blessings). Later when I talked with Doug WA6RJN, He told me when he got to area after dark he was hesitant to go onto the trail, not knowing what dangers lurked on the path. Because of the before noted partial find to Deryl, I found it necessary to award Doug with a ¾ found ( this was without Board approval). Picked up T9 and T7 Sunday morning and both where still transmitting. Thanks for all the teams that came out, we had a great turnout for these times, hope those of you who took the time and effort had a good time hunting.

Deryl has already posted the location of my two T's, sorry I don't have Steve's.
I will try and post pictures that were taken by N6MI, and myself.

The results are as follows;

K6VCR checked in late from the 15 and 60 frwys. DNF any after going up to Wrightwood and back down to La Canada, Quit to return home. Thanks Tom for making effort.

  Doug WA6RJN also went up to Wrightwood  and around to Pasadena, and had the hunt in the bag, but was frighten from going on the trail leading up to T9, because of the darkness and being alone. We know Doug, being out alone in strange area can be a big factor in completing the hunt. Without consulting the BOARD I gave Doug ¾ of a find for T9. It now was getting too late for Doug to take the time to get to T7. Thank you for participating, I know that coming out from Simi Valley is a big commitment to spend the day away from your family.

KA6UDZ found T7 at 11:58 am. Had 36 miles. Heard T2 and left to track it down. Thanks Scot for coming out and the only eye to eye chat we had.

N6AIN found T7 @ 4:26 with 115.1 miles. Got close to T9, but missed trail (paved) 3N09 to T9. He left area when his head started to burst from the altitude. After consulting with the BOARD, it was deemed proper to give him ½ find for T9. Deryl, sorry that we all are becoming fragile with age and having to quit early, but thanks for making effort, and congratulations on finding T7!

AF6O / N6MI team were the only team to find two T's! And yes they went up to Wrightwood also and went full circle of the T's. Now I was informed that they had over the day consumed 7 Starbucks coffees, they actually had excess energy when they found T7 (last T). It was just after sunset when they walked up to T9 (see picture), and 7:50 when they bagged T7. They had accumulated 200 miles while doing this. Congratulations guys, you win the opportunity to hide the next MEATHEAD hide!
Thanks for coming out on our hide.
