Meathead Poker
Transmitter Hunt

Hiders: Bob N6ZHZ and Cathy KD6CYG

Where: North East of Yermo off the 15.

From the hiders, N6ZHZ abd KD6CYG, Bob & Cathy.

We're surprised that nobody recalls any hiders planting Ts at the Alvord Mtn. Radio Tower a few miles north of I-15 between Field Road and Afton Canyon. It's elevation is about 3,100 ft. and Mt. Baldy is just visible from the tower site. It has a grand 360 degree view, overlooking Ft. Irwin, San Gorgonio, Baldy, Afton Canyon, and out towards Baker.
Uncertain if we could get a signal back to PV, we planned this to be a "start anywhere" hunt. Mileage wasn't a consideration -- we had 5 Ts, so placed ten cards at each T. The best poker hand would win. As the pack was bought at a 99¢ store, Scott N6MI figured we spent 10 cents per hunter (2 cents per card): a true "high stakes poker game."
We found some choice spots along the ridgeline of Field Road (with agate and jasper rocks) and sprinkled T2, T4 and T5 appropriately along the sandy roads and creosote.
Running a bit late, we got the main T on the air by 10 AM, pushing 60 watts through an 11 element beam. Deryl said he could hear it just fine, and Dave, N6MJN could hear it in Orange County. So, we backed the power down to 10 watts, still huntable from PV. We did not count on the 50% duty cycle, and had not yet figured out how to reprogram the new PiCon T. Despite that, four teams came out and all four found all 5 Ts in the pile-up of bleeps, blips, and "Bad Cathy!"
Most of the Ts were found by mid afternoon, and the hunt was over by 7:30, when Scott graciously picked up T 4 for us on his way out of the area. The Poker Results are:

1st - N6MI, SCOTT -- WINNER! With Ace of Hearts, Ace of Clubs, King of Diamonds, 10 of Spades and 2 of Clubs. (Scott hides in March)

2nd - WA6RJN, DOUG: Queen of Clubs, Queen of Spades, Jack of Hearts, 5 of Clubs, and 4 of Clubs

3rd - WB6JPI, BOB - King of Hearts, Jack of Spades, 10 of Diamonds, 5 of Spades and 4 of Diamonds

4th - N6AIN, DERYL - Queen of Diamonds, Jack of Clubs, 9 of Spades, 4 of Hearts, and 2 of Hearts.

Thanks to all who came out!
Bob N6ZHZ and Cathy KD6CYG
