THE APRIL 25TH ALL DAY

TRANSMITTER HUNT

HIDERS: RAY N6EKS AND DERYL N6AIN

NUMBER OF TRANSMITTERS: 6

NUMBER OF HUNTERS: 6 OFFICIAL AND 2 UNOFFICIAL

LOCATION:

IN THE ANTELOPE VALLEY, JUST SOUTH OF THE CALIFORNIA POPPY RESERVE
AAA L.A and Vicinity B5&6

When the area was checked a couple of weeks before the hunt, it was clear, calm with a comfortable temperature and the poppies were open and it was beautiful. On the Friday before the hunt there was a slight wind. On the day of the hunt, the wind started off mild and as the day went on, the wind became increasingly stronger (and stronger). We had hoped that the poppies would be open and it would make for a beautiful hunt for the hunters. Transmitter 1 was located on a dirt road, about a quarter mile east of the California Poppy Reserve entrance on Lancaster Road in the Antelope Valley.

The transmitter was emitting 40 watts into an 11 element horizontal beam, pointed approximately at Mt. Wilson or a little Southeast of there. There were two other transmitters around the poppy fields and one underneath a power line tower where three major power lines intersected. These transmitters were running about 250 to 500 milliwatts into vertical antennas. Two micro watt transmitters were also hidden. One was located across Lancaster Road from T1, on the side of the Poppy Reserve. The other was located on the dirt road (direct route) from Lancaster Road, to T1on a fence post (along the dirt road) at the point where a dry stream went thru the dirt road/fence. The micro t's were vertically polarized. The hunters had headed east from the start point, some reported seeing four corners, Banning, Beaumont, Gorman and Wrightwood. Several hunters after having found all or most of the t's around 8 pm, went to Barone's Italian Restaurant in Lancaster. This was a highlight of the hunt - good food, good company, good stories. Thanks to everyone that came out.
